Vorwärts Gebäude, Protected architectural monument in Margareten, Vienna
The Vorwärts Gebäude is a protected building in Margareten with a distinctive facade featuring a decorative clock and carved stone figures. These sculptures were created by artist Anton Hanak in 1910 and depict male and female workers positioned on either side of the clock.
The building was established as headquarters for the Social Democratic Workers' Party and housed the printing facility for the Arbeiter-Zeitung newspaper. Before World War I, it served as a meeting place for influential political figures including Leon Trotsky and Nikolai Bukharin.
The building's name references progress and forward movement, reflecting its role as a center for labor activism. The carved worker figures on the facade remain visible reminders of this purpose and shape how visitors experience the building today.
The building is located at Rechte Wienzeile 97 and is easily visible from the street. Today it houses the Association for the History of the Labor Movement and the Bruno Kreisky Foundation, which maintain their collections and archives within its walls.
The building served as the newspaper printing facility until 1986, after which its function changed significantly. This role as a publishing hub made it an important center for distributing labor movement media in the early 20th century.
