Schloss Gamlitz, Medieval castle in Gamlitz, Austria

Schloss Gamlitz is a three-story castle set among the vineyards of southern Styria, featuring vaulted interior rooms and extensive cellars beneath for wine storage. The single-wing structure has stone walls and internal chambers designed specifically for aging and preserving wine.

Built between 1111 and 1131 in the Gamlitzbach Valley, the castle changed hands multiple times through the Sponheim counts and St. Paul monastery. Over centuries it remained a center of wine production in the region.

The castle maintains winemaking traditions visible throughout its spaces: visitors see historical cellars and production methods in their original setting. Wine culture shapes the daily rhythm here and how people use the rooms.

The property operates as a hotel with lodging and dining options, where visitors can taste wine and explore the cellars. It makes sense to allow sufficient time for a tour of the wine facilities, as the underground spaces are extensive.

In the 19th century the castle served as a cavalry barracks before being converted into a hospitality business, shifting to an entirely new purpose. This transformation shows how the building was adapted to serve different needs over time.
