Gamlitz

Gamlitz is a market municipality in Leibnitz District in Southern Styria, defined by rolling hills and expansive vineyards. The town sits near the Slovenian border and is home to around 1,500 residents, with wine production and local farming shaping its character.

Gamlitz first appears in written records in 1145, though the region has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Archaeological finds including Roman tombstones show that Celts and Romans lived here, and these artifacts are now preserved in the town's church.

Gamlitz likely takes its name from a Slavic word meaning hill, reflecting the region's layered settlement history. Wine culture shapes daily life and the landscape today, with vineyards covering the hills and local wines defining the community's identity.

The town is best explored by bicycle or on foot, with numerous trails through vineyards and rolling terrain plus bike rentals including electric options available locally. The free Motorikpark with over 40 stations offers activities for all ages and makes day trip planning straightforward.

The Motorikpark with over 40 stations is the largest of its kind in Europe and was designed by a sports scientist to improve motor skills and reflexes through play. The park is free to visit and is surrounded by a landscape pond perfect for walking.
