Schloss Irnharting, Former water castle in Gunskirchen, Austria

Schloss Irnharting is a former water castle whose two building complexes once stood on two islands in a large pond, of which only minor remnants survive. The front complex is a three-winged structure with a tower built in 1533, its base forming a gate hall that was originally the only entrance; a masonry bridge spans the ditch. The second complex, a manor house built in 1640, is now the inhabited part, and the triangular courtyard with the tower resembles a ruin.

The house was first recorded on 14 August 1349 as "Haus ze Yermhärting", held by Ulrich von Thann. In 1399 the Bishop of Passau granted it as a fief to Hans Meurlin; Wolf Oberheimer owned it in the later 15th century, and in 1479 it passed to the Polheimer family. Devastated in the Peasant Wars, it was restored after 1632 by Johann Paul Spindler, whose line held it until Count Maximilian Spindler; from 1805 it passed through the Religious Fund and several owners to the Fischer von Ankern family.

The name Irnharting goes back to the 1349 form "Haus ze Yermhärting". A local legend tells of two noblewomen who lost their way in the forest west of Gunskirchen in 1329, vowed a small church, and were saved; their father then had a chapel and a castle built. Since 2019 the three-sided courtyard has hosted the annual Mostkost cider festival.

The castle stands in the village of Irnharting, part of the market town of Gunskirchen in the district of Wels-Land. It is private property and visitors are refused entry, so the grounds and buildings can only be seen from outside. The tower and three-sided courtyard have not been renovated for nearly 200 years and parts of the roofs have collapsed.

The tower and the three-sided courtyard were built in 1533; the courtyard once held rented flats and now stands roofless, with part of its roofs collapsed after a fire on 13 July 2019. The tower's baroque hood was lost in a fire during Holy Week of 1865, after which it received a hipped roof and lost its clock and bells.
