Schloss Irnharting

Schloss Irnharting, Medieval château in Gunskirchen, Austria.

Schloss Irnharting is a water castle built on two islands in a pond, connected by wooden bridges that span across the water. The complex comprises multiple buildings arranged within this water-surrounded layout, creating a typical medieval fortified arrangement.

The fortress first appeared in written records in 1349 as the residence of Knight Ulrich von Tann, who held it as a fief from the Bishop of Passau. Throughout the following centuries it changed hands several times and underwent multiple periods of rebuilding and enlargement.

The site served as a significant center for the Polheim family and shaped life across the surrounding area for centuries. Visitors can still observe the marks of this heritage in how the buildings are arranged and constructed.

The castle is located near Gunskirchen and can be reached by local roads, though it requires advance arrangements to visit. Since the property is privately held, travelers should check ahead before making a trip to see it.

A tax record from 1627 documents the exact layout of the castle at that time, revealing it as a substantial multi-building complex. This historical document offers a rare glimpse into the castle's true scale and internal arrangement during that era.
