Katzelsdorf-Schloss, Protected medieval castle in Katzelsdorf, Austria.
Katzelsdorf Castle is a rectangular fortress with three corner bastions located in Katzelsdorf, Austria. The building displays defensive features from its original design as a water castle constructed near the Austrian border.
The castle was first mentioned in 1183 by minnesinger Ulrich von Liechtenstein, making it one of the region's earliest documented structures. In the 17th century, Wolf Mathias von Königsberg undertook extensive renovations that shaped the building as it appears today.
The castle was home to Caroline Bonaparte, sister of Napoleon, who lived there from 1822 to 1830. Later it passed to Marie Thérèse Charlotte de Bourbon, daughter of Marie Antoinette, who arrived in 1845.
Today the site operates as an event and seminar center run by the municipality of Katzelsdorf. Visitors will find a restaurant and public gathering areas available on the grounds.
During World War II the castle housed the largest horse hospital on the Eastern Front. Military forces occupied the main building and used it to treat horses during the campaigns.
