Schloss Merkenstein

Schloss Merkenstein is a neogothic château in Bad Vöslau situated at approximately 460 meters elevation. The building displays symmetrical wings with ornate decorative details and has been completely restored according to historical specifications following wartime damage.

Josef Karl von Dietrichstein constructed the original building between 1801 and 1803. Following severe wartime destruction in 1945, it was later comprehensively rebuilt.

The chapel on the grounds dates to the 16th century and represents an earlier phase of the site's importance to the region. The well in the garden relates to a significant event that occurred at this location in the past.

The château is privately owned and viewable from the exterior, though interior access is not available to the public. The exterior grounds and garden can be visited while respecting the owner's privacy.

The gardens contain a hermitage and observation tower that Countess Elisabeth Waldstein-Wartenberg commissioned in the early 19th century. These features reflect the artistic interests of the noble family and exemplify romantic garden design from that period.
