Steinitzsteg Footbridge, Pedestrian bridge in Vienna, Austria
Steinitzsteg is a pedestrian crossing spanning the Danube River and New Danube Canal, connecting the districts of Brigittenau and Floridsdorf. The bridge extends approximately 875 meters with 20 spans constructed using steel hollow box methods, maintaining a consistent width of 9 meters to accommodate both foot traffic and bicycles.
The bridge was built in 1995 and briefly carried car traffic during the Nordbrücke renovation in 1996. Since then it has served exclusively as a pedestrian and bicycle route.
The footbridge bears the name of Wilhelm Steinitz, a chess champion honored through a commemorative plaque installed in 2010. This naming connects the crossing to intellectual history and creates a quiet tribute within the city's everyday landscape.
The footbridge is open to foot traffic and cyclists throughout the year and offers a direct crossing between the two districts. The width provides comfortable space for both groups to share the route without congestion.
The bridge was engineered with the ability to convert to vehicle traffic, scheduled for the 2028-2031 Nordbrücke renovation project. This flexible design reveals it was conceived as a temporary solution for major road construction works.
