Allgemeine Poliklinik, Vienna

Allgemeine Poliklinik is a former hospital in Alsergrund that combines late-historistic style with decorative tilework on its exterior. The structure housed multiple specialized outpatient departments and was designed to serve the wider community beyond wealthy patients.

Founded in 1872 by university assistants, it relocated to its purpose-built location in 1892. The facility pioneered a new model of accessible medical care in Europe during this period.

The facade displays majolica medallions featuring portraits of renowned physicians that visitors notice while walking past. This artistic design reflects the pride of the medical community and makes the history of healing visible to observers.

The building is privately used today and not open to the public, but its decorated facade can be viewed from the street. The medallions are best seen from directly in front of the building during daytime hours.

Under Julius Mannaberg's direction, the facility created Europe's first urological outpatient clinic, a revolutionary specialization for 19th century medicine. This pioneering service attracted patients and medical students from across the continent.
