Schloss Köppach, building in Atzbach, Austria
Schloss Köppach is a castle in Atzbach originally built in the 16th century and marked by two towers at its corners. The grounds also include a mausoleum with a chapel that houses the graves of former owners.
The Köppach family is documented as early as 1196, indicating a long tradition of rule. The building itself was constructed in the 16th century and changed hands multiple times through marriage, sale, and inheritance until it was severely damaged by fire in 1932.
The castle served as the seat of the Köppach family and later other noble families who displayed their status through this residence. Today the remaining walls and neighboring chapel recall the former importance of this place to the region.
The castle is located in the small village of Atzbach and is easily accessible by car with parking available near the grounds. The building is privately inhabited and not open for tours, but the exterior with its towers can be viewed from outside.
The mausoleum opposite the castle was painted in 1845 and displays a relief of the Resurrection of Christ inside, reflecting the artistic care of former owners. The graves in the crypt remind us that this was an important family memorial site.
