Zwölferhorn cableway, Cable car transportation in Sankt Gilgen, Austria.
Zwölferhorn cableway carries passengers from Sankt Gilgen upward to about 1522 meters elevation over a route with roughly 900 meters of vertical rise. The modern red and yellow cabins complete this journey in around eleven minutes.
The system opened in 1957 and fundamentally changed how people could reach the mountains in the region at that time. It emerged during an era when modern transport technology began making remote mountain areas accessible to far more visitors.
The cable car links the village to the mountain and transforms the ascent into a shared experience for locals and visitors alike. Once at the top, people from the wider area gather to take in the views and rest in the mountain huts.
The cable car operates daily with frequent departures and offers parking at the base station. Weather at altitude can change quickly, so bring appropriate clothing regardless of conditions down in the valley.
During the ride, you can watch paragliders launching from platforms near the mountain station. These colorfully painted craft dominate the skyscape at the summit and turn every visit into a special show.
