Pfarrkirche hl. Ägydius, Sankt Gilgen, Parish church in Sankt Gilgen, Austria
Pfarrkirche hl. Ägydius is a baroque church in Sankt Gilgen built on elevated ground overlooking Lake Wolfgang, marked by its tall tower and white-painted walls. Inside, the church features ceiling frescoes and painted side altars, alongside a modern three-manual pipe organ that replaced an earlier instrument.
The original church was built in the early 14th century in gothic style and served the parish for centuries. A major renovation in the late 1700s transformed the building into its current baroque design and structure.
The ceiling paintings created by Josef Beer in 1770 depict the ascension of Saint Giles to heaven, while Paul Troger contributed artwork for the side altars.
The church is easily accessible on foot in the center of the village and open to visitors at standard times. The location near the lake and adjacent cemetery makes it simple to combine a visit with a walk through the surrounding area.
Adjacent to the church stands a cemetery chapel from the 18th century featuring artwork focused on death and remembrance, with graves spanning centuries. This small chapel offers a starkly different mood from the main building's decoration.
