Festung Kniepass

Festung Kniepass is a medieval fortified structure on a hilltop near Unken with exhibition spaces inside. The compound is surrounded by a protective wall and has a gate on the eastern side that leads into the interior.

The site shows evidence of settlement from the Bronze Age and medieval fortifications. The location first appeared in written records in the 14th century.

The museum displays objects from different periods of local history and tells the story of people who lived in this region. The exhibits give visitors a sense of how long this place has been inhabited.

The fortress sits on a hilltop and is reached by walking uphill. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and allow time for exploring the site.

Between 1766 and 1965, the fortress served as a home for gamekeepers and their families who lived without modern conveniences. This everyday use of a historical place is reflected in what the exhibits tell visitors today.
