Nikolaihof Mautern

Nikolaihof is a wine estate and restaurant with thick stone walls, a central courtyard containing the Agapitus Chapel, and extensive cellars beneath the main buildings. The property sits along the Danube and brings together historic structures with modern facilities for dining and wine production.

The site began as the Roman fort Favianis in 63 CE and later became property of the St. Nikola monastery from Passau. This transition from a military post to a religious center shaped the place for centuries.

The estate has practiced biodynamic viticulture since 1971, an approach that shapes how the vineyards and winery operate daily. The kitchen here sources ingredients from the property itself and from nearby local producers.

The restaurant operates Wednesday through Friday starting at 5 p.m. and Saturdays from noon, with seating available both indoors and outdoors. Visitors should be aware that hours may be less regular during winter months.

Archaeological digs have uncovered foundations of Roman barracks from the 2nd century and remnants of a late Roman fortification still visible at the site today. These remains show how important this location was during Roman times and how long it remained occupied.
