Schloss Mautern

Schloss Mautern, Medieval castle in Mautern an der Donau, Austria.

Schloss Mautern is a medieval castle on the Danube in Austria featuring four wings built during different periods that surround a square courtyard. A protected plane tree stands at the center of this courtyard, adding to the character of the space.

The castle occupies the site of a Roman fort established in 326 and later became an administrative center for religious leaders from a German diocese. Its four wings developed across several centuries, reflecting architectural styles from the medieval period through the baroque era.

The chapel here holds religious significance for the region and features a restored baroque altar that reflects the spiritual role this building has played over centuries. The dedication to Saint Andrew shows how the site maintained religious connections throughout its transformation.

The castle is currently used as a residence, so public access is limited to the courtyard area only. Plan to view the exterior and courtyard from the accessible entry points without entering the building itself.

The northern wing preserves foundations from a medieval tower built in the 13th century that remain visible today. These hidden architectural layers reveal the earliest defensive structures underneath the later baroque window details that ornament this side of the building.
