Gamskarkogelhütte is a mountain refuge located at 2,467 meters elevation in the Ankogel group, providing sleeping accommodations for mountaineers and hikers. The facility features dormitory rooms and individual beds to suit different preferences.
Built in 1828 by Archduke Johann, this shelter is the oldest purpose-built mountaineering hut in the Eastern Alps. This historical structure marks the beginning of organized mountain activities in the region.
The hut serves regional dishes made from local ingredients and maintains traditional Alpine dining customs. Visitors experience the mountain culture of the region firsthand here.
The refuge operates from mid-June through September with approximately 20 sleeping spaces distributed across various rooms. An additional winter room provides four beds for use during snowy periods.
The hut sits on Europe's highest grass mountain and collects rainwater for daily needs. Solar panels provide electricity, making it self-reliant in this remote location.
