Schloss Herberstein

Schloss Herberstein is a castle and art museum in Stubenberg, situated on a rock formation within the Feistritz ravine and naturally protected on three sides. The building combines architecture from different periods with contemporary art collections displayed across its interior spaces.

The original fortress, named Herwigstein, was built around 1300 as a defensive structure for the region. During the 16th century, it was transformed into a Renaissance residence and has retained this architectural character since.

The castle houses a contemporary art museum featuring works by Austrian artists, with an extensive collection of sculptures by Bruno Gironcoli displayed throughout its rooms. These works have made the place an important destination for visitors interested in modern artistic expression.

The castle is open daily and can be explored on foot, with access reached via a path through the ravine. Visitors should check seasonal opening hours before planning their visit, as these may vary throughout the year.
