Bretterwandspitze, Mountain summit in Matrei in Osttirol, Austria

Bretterwandspitze is a 2,887 m summit in the Gradötz ridge of the Granatspitz Group, in the municipality of Matrei in Osttirol. A western side ridge runs from the Stellachturm (3,038 m) past the Dürrenfeldscharte (2,823 m) to the northeast summit (2,855 m) and the main summit with its cross. South of the Bretterwandhöhe (2,620 m), the Bretterwand flank drops steeply southeast above the Bunzkögele (2,430 m).

The normal route starts at a parking area above the scattered settlement of Glanz at 1,530 m, crosses the Edelweißwiese meadow to the Äußere Steineralm at 1,914 m, then follows the Steiner Bach and climbs east to the Bunzkögele at 2,430 m. From there the path runs along the ridge over the Bretterwandhöhe at 2,620 m to the main summit and its cross. An alternative approach to the Äußere Steineralm starts from the Felbertauernstraße at the Steiner Wasserfall car park via the hamlet of Stein.

Locals call the Bretterwandspitze one of Matrei in Osttirol's Hausberge, a home mountain climbed from the hamlet of Glanz. The summit cross on the main peak marks the end of the normal route, and the ridge walk passes the Bretterwandhöhe and Bunzkögele before reaching it.

The main hiking route begins from the Glanz parking area and follows a marked trail to the summit. Visitors should prepare for steep sections and changing weather conditions typical of higher altitude alpine terrain.

The Bretterwand is the steep southeast-facing flank south of the Bretterwandhöhe (2,620 m) and east of the Bunzkögele (2,430 m), visible far into the valley. The normal route from the Glanz parking area (1,530 m) passes the Äußere Steineralm (1,914 m) and the Bunzkögele before following the ridge over the Bretterwandhöhe to the summit cross.
