Maxingvilla, Swiss-style chalet in Hietzing, Austria

The Maxingvilla was a Swiss chalet-style house in Hietzing featuring wooden decorative elements and steeply pitched roofs. The building sat on grounds between the cemetery and a side entrance to Schönbrunn Palace Park.

Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian had the villa built in 1849 and it opened with a celebration on July 6, 1850. The structure lasted until 1955, when it was demolished due to deteriorating condition.

The name Maxing comes from the family that lived on the grounds for many years. Visitors can still see today how the location between the cemetery and the palace park shaped the villa's role in Vienna's landscape.

The foundations of the former villa remain visible in Maxingpark and can be reached via Maxingstrasse in Vienna's 13th district. The park is easy to walk through and offers open access to the site.

Composer Johann Strauß wrote the waltz Maxing-Tänze opus 79 specifically for the opening celebration in 1850. The composition was a musical tribute to the inauguration of the new house.
