Tabakregie/ HTL Ottakring, Protected cultural monument in Ottakring, Vienna.
Tabakregie is a large factory complex at Thaliastraße with multiple buildings designed in Neo-Renaissance style that reflect its industrial past. The main structure now houses classrooms and workshops for a technical school.
The complex was built in 1905 as the second factory for Austria's tobacco authority and became a major production site for tobacco products. Decades later, it was converted into an educational facility.
The site now functions as a technical school, maintaining its role as a place where skilled work takes place. Students use the spaces for hands-on training, giving the original production function a contemporary purpose.
The site is well served by public transit, with a tram stop nearby making it accessible from across Vienna. Since the buildings are used as a school, visiting outside class hours or arranging in advance is recommended.
Artist Leo Zogmayer created a text sculpture installation here in 1998 that brings contemporary art into the historic industrial space. This addition shows how modern creation can coexist with preserved industrial heritage.
