Ottakring, Administrative district in western Vienna, Austria
Ottakring is the 16th district of Vienna located in the western part of the city, stretching from the Gürtel road toward the Wienerwald hills. The neighborhood contains residential blocks, shops, and small industrial areas that blend together throughout the district.
Bavarian settlers founded the original village about 1000 years ago near what is now Ottakring Cemetery. The area was incorporated into Vienna in 1892 and grew significantly afterward.
The Brunnenmarkt is Vienna's largest street market and reflects the diverse population of the district. People from different backgrounds shop here daily, and the market shapes the everyday rhythm of the neighborhood.
The U3 subway line connects the district directly to central Vienna, and several bus routes serve the neighborhood and outlying areas. Walking is easy thanks to clear pathways and good orientation between different zones.
Three major Austrian brands operate their facilities here: Ottakringer Brewery, Manner wafer factory, and Meinl coffee company. These businesses have shaped the neighborhood for many decades.
