Gaugefechtsstand Wien, Military command bunker in Ottakring, Austria
Gaugefechtsstand Wien is an underground command bunker located in the Wienerwald area of Vienna, accessed via a blast-proof staircase that descends about 25 meters to a main horizontal tunnel. The tunnel has two separate entrances and exits and connects a series of rooms once used for command and communication purposes.
The command center was in operation between 1942 and 1945, working closely with the three Flak towers spread across Vienna to coordinate air raid warnings and defense operations. After the war, the above-ground structures were removed to prevent unauthorized access.
During the war years, military personnel and civil officials worked side by side here to coordinate air defense alerts across the city. This shows how deeply such hidden structures were woven into the daily life of Vienna.
The northern exit is still partially visible in the Wienerwald forest, but the terrain is uneven and the exact location is not immediately obvious. Anyone planning to explore the site should wear sturdy footwear and allow extra time to find the entrance.
The bunker housed a Drahtfunk system, an early form of mass transmission that sent warning signals through the telephone network directly into homes and businesses. This system continued to function even when normal radio broadcasting failed.
