Schloss Wald, Renaissance water castle in Pyhra, Austria
Schloss Wald is a water castle in Pyhra that consists of multiple building sections surrounded by moats. The complex displays Renaissance features with thick walls and a distinctive round tower topped by a conical roof.
The castle was first documented in 1140 as the residence of Udalschalk von Wald and later developed into a Renaissance complex. Over the centuries it experienced military conflicts and changed ownership several times.
The structure evolved from a medieval fortress into a Renaissance castle during the 16th century under the ownership of the Herren von Greiß family.
The castle is private property of the Auersperg family located near Pyhra in Lower Austria. Visits require advance permission as the estate is not open to the general public.
The French prince Jerome Bonaparte used the castle briefly in 1817 under the name Hieronymus Prince of Montfort as a refuge during his exile. This short stay by a European royal figure created a rare historical connection to the Napoleonic era.
