Gars Castle

Gars Castle is a fortress ruin situated on elevated ground above the Kamp River, featuring remaining walls and a three-story Renaissance wing adjacent to medieval sections. The site consists of multiple building segments from different periods that together form a compound of stone and brick structures.

The fortress was built in the 11th century as a residence of the Babenberg dynasty, and Leopold III moved his court to nearby Klosterneuburg in 1114. This relocation marked the end of the castle's importance as a ruler's seat.

The inner courtyard hosts open-air opera performances during summer months against the backdrop of the ancient walls. This use connects the castle with modern cultural life and draws visitors from the surrounding region.
