Arnstein ruins, Medieval castle ruins in Maria Raisenmarkt, Austria.
Arnstein ruins sit on a hilltop in the Vienna Woods forest with surviving walls and a round tower from the original castle. The elevated location offers views across the surrounding landscape and shows how the medieval fortress was positioned for observation and defense.
The castle was founded in 1170 by Wichard von Arnstein as a regional stronghold. It suffered damage during the 1529 Turkish siege of Vienna and was partially rebuilt afterward, but gradually fell into abandonment.
The ruins hold protected status as a heritage monument, showing how medieval castles were built and defended. Visitors can see the architectural choices that made such structures work in their time.
Several hiking trails pass through the forest to reach the ruins and connect to other regional walking routes. Wearing proper footwear for forest terrain is advisable, as the ground is uneven and can be muddy after rain.
Austrian Federal Forests have managed the preservation of these ruins since 1955, protecting a rare example of a medieval fortress that was never fully restored. This choice to keep the site partially ruined rather than completely reconstruct it makes it especially valuable for understanding how castles actually aged over time.
