Leiten, Religious hermitage in Sankt Jakob in Defereggen, Austria.
Leiten is a small settlement on the sunny side of the Defereggental between 1480 and 1490 meters in elevation, overlooking the Schwarzach river. It consists of four buildings with two registered addresses that are accessible by the L25 road.
The settlement grew from a medieval alpine pasture named Leiten that once fell under the administration of Schloss Bruck in Lienz. This tradition of high-altitude settlement runs deep in the region's history of mountain farming.
The buildings at Leiten display mountain farmhouse construction with thick walls and steep roofs suited to the high altitude. You can still observe how residents use the farmyard as both living space and workplace.
The location sits in a quiet spot with good views, but it is only accessible by the L25 road, meaning you should plan to arrive by car. Access may vary depending on the season or weather conditions.
The population dropped from 18 residents in 1971 to just six by 1981, a quiet shift reflecting broader migration trends away from remote alpine areas. Today the settlement feels like a place where time moves slowly and mountain culture endures.
