Heydar Aliyev International Airport, International airport in Bina district, Baku, Azerbaijan.
Heydar Aliyev International Airport is an international commercial facility in the Bina district of Baku, Azerbaijan. Two terminals operate on the grounds, with the larger handling around six million passengers each year.
The facility opened in 1933 as Bina Airport and initially served domestic aviation during the Soviet period. The current name was introduced in 2004 to honor the late president.
The name honors a former president, while geometric patterns appear in waiting areas and passageways throughout the building. Travelers often notice how traditional motifs combine with glass and steel in public spaces.
The facility sits around 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) northeast of central Baku and is reachable day and night by public bus. Both terminals offer duty-free shops and currency exchange for international travelers.
In 2014, the first direct service between Azerbaijan and the United States launched here, connecting Baku with New York City. This route shortened travel time considerably between the two countries.
