Allar Cave, Archaeological cave in Allar village, Yardymli Rayon, Azerbaijan.
Allar Cave is a cavern site on the left bank of the Vilesh River in the Yardymli region, situated at about 1,993 meters elevation. It consists of several chambers and natural passages shaped by water flow over geological time.
The site was examined through archaeological excavations in 1993, which uncovered nine stone tools from the Middle Paleolithic period. These findings demonstrate that early humans inhabited this high mountain region of the Caucasus.
The Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences conducts research expeditions to study prehistoric human activities in this location.
Visitors should wear sturdy hiking boots and bring a flashlight to safely explore the cave interior. Guided tours are available and recommended to learn more about the archaeological significance and ensure safe navigation through the passages.
The cave sits at nearly 2,000 meters elevation and ranks among the highest known Middle Paleolithic archaeological sites in the southern Caucasus. This extreme altitude is remarkable evidence of how far early humans ventured into mountainous terrain.
