Qahqaheh Castle

Qahqaheh Castle is a mountain fortress near Meshginshahr built with thick stone walls and multiple chambers carved into the slope. The structure combines defensive features with areas that once served as holding cells.

The fortress was built during the Sassanid period as a military outpost and later repurposed under the Safavids as a prison for political detainees. During this later era, it held several notable prisoners.

The architectural design of Qahqaheh Castle represents Persian military engineering practices from both Sassanid and Safavid periods.

Access to the castle requires hiking along mountain paths and sturdy footwear plus weather-appropriate clothing. Visitors should plan their visit during daylight hours and allow time for exploration of the different levels.

The castle received official designation as Iranian National Heritage in 2002, protecting its dual role as both military and penal site. Today visitors can still see inscriptions and marks left by those who were held there.
