Sheykh Babi Yagub Mausoleum, Islamic mausoleum in Babi village, Fuzuli District, Azerbaijan.
Sheykh Babi Yagub Mausoleum is an octagonal limestone building in Babi village featuring a cupola made of thin stone plates and a cylindrical brick minaret. The interior contains an underground crypt system with wall openings that allow light to enter.
The building was constructed in 1272 as the burial place of Sheykh Babi Yagub ibn Ismail Gur-Har, confirmed by Arabic Kufi inscriptions on the walls. The structure reflects the medieval architectural style of the region during that era.
The structure displays traditional Azerbaijani building methods with geometric patterns typical of medieval Islamic architecture. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship in the stonework and decorative details throughout the building.
The site is best visited during daylight hours since the underground chambers are only minimally lit by wall openings. Comfortable shoes are recommended as you will navigate through confined interior spaces.
Archaeological excavations at the site uncovered six stone graves containing warrior remains and medieval artifacts such as arrowheads. Local stories tell of a possible tunnel connecting this mausoleum to the nearby Akhmedallar Mausoleum.
