Ekeren, Northern district in Antwerp, Belgium
Ekeren is a district on the northern edge of Antwerp comprising three residential neighborhoods: Sint-Mariaburg, Donk, and Leugenberg. The area features tree-lined streets, local shops, and green spaces that differ from the busier city center.
First recorded as Hecerna in 1155, the area developed as its own independent municipality over the following centuries. In 1983, it merged with Antwerp and became part of the larger city administration.
The Jozef Pauly Municipal Academy at the heart of the district welcomes music students from across the region, making it a learning hub for young musicians. The school's performances happen regularly throughout the year, drawing local families and friends.
The district is easy to explore by bicycle thanks to its flat terrain and reasonable size. Free bike parking is available at several locations including train platforms, making arrival and navigation straightforward.
The Oude Landen nature reserve near the district's edges shelters a diverse mix of local plants and animal life that many visitors overlook. The protected wetland offers a quiet escape and a chance to spot birds and small mammals during a walk.
