Fort de Pontisse

Fort de Pontisse is a military fortification located in Herstal on elevated ground with thick concrete walls and multiple structures. The complex includes underground spaces that were built as part of a defensive system for the entire valley.

The fort was built between 1888 and 1892 as part of a defensive plan for the Liège area. It served an important role during both World Wars when military conflicts affected the valley.

The fort reflects Belgian military strategy and engineering from the 1800s, showing how defensive structures were planned to protect the valley. Walking through it helps visitors understand how people thought about safety and protection during that era.

Access is primarily through guided tours that should be arranged beforehand. Parking is available near the entrance, and comfortable shoes are recommended since the grounds have uneven terrain.
