Brusselpoort, Medieval city gate in Mechelen, Belgium
Brusselpoort is the last remaining city gate of the original twelve entrances in Mechelen's defensive walls and displays Scheldt Gothic architectural style. Today the building houses the collection of De Maan City Puppet Theater.
The gate was built in the 13th century and underwent significant changes in the 16th century when its towers were reduced in height and given new roofs. These modifications shaped its appearance for centuries to come.
Over the centuries, the gate served multiple purposes including a police station, youth center, toll collection point, and artist workshop. Alfred Ost used these spaces for his creative work at one point.
The gate is located at Hoogstraat 83 and is currently not open to visitors as it houses the puppet theater. You can still photograph the exterior anytime to capture its architectural details and historic form.
The gate received its name Overste Poort due to its location at the highest point of Mechelen and replaced an older Brussels Gate. The construction of Nieuwe Steenweg road made this new fortification opening necessary.
