Basilica of Saint Servatius

The Basilica of Saint Servatius is a baroque church with vaulted ceilings adorned with refined ornaments and an ornately decorated main altar inside. The building displays characteristic baroque architecture featuring curved lines, gilded details, and multiple side aisles that structure the interior space.

The church was built between 1660 and 1700 under the supervision of architect Gilbertus van Zinnik during a period of baroque construction expansion. Its completion marked an era when the region was establishing new religious structures under Spanish control.

The name honors Saint Servatius, an early Christian martyr whose devotion shaped this community for centuries. Visitors can observe how the building continues to serve as the heart of local religious life and community gatherings.

The church stands centrally in Grimbergen right on the Kerkplein main square and is easily accessible on foot. The interior is open to visitors outside of services, though respectful behavior is expected throughout the building.

The building received protected monument status in 1937, officially recognizing it as a national cultural treasure. This early designation shows that experts recognized its exceptional architectural and historical importance long ago.
