Grimbergen, municipality in Flemish Brabant, Belgium
Grimbergen is a municipality in the Arrondissement of Halle-Vilvoorde in Belgium, situated north of Brussels. It covers several small villages with old farms, houses from different periods, a basilica, a chapel, and the remains of a castle.
Grimbergen grew in the medieval period under a local noble family, whose castle was badly damaged during wars between rival powers. In the 19th century, Belgian independence brought a new political order to the region, ending a long period of foreign rule.
The name Grimbergen comes from the medieval noble family that once ruled this land, and their legacy is still present in the street names and local stories. Walking through the village, you notice old farm buildings and the abbey, which show how much rural life and the church shaped the community over the centuries.
Grimbergen has a network of marked walking routes with numbered points that you can follow using an app or a printed map available locally. Small accommodations are found near the main sights, so most of the village is easy to explore on foot.
On the grounds of the abbey, there is one of Belgium's oldest public observatories, set up in 1967 inside old farm buildings. Many visitors walk past without realizing they could look through telescopes at the night sky right there.
