Sint-Michielskerk

Sint-Michielskerk is a Gothic church with a prominent bell tower that shapes the townscape of Roeselare. The tower contains roughly 50 bells and a historic clock mechanism that has regulated time for the city over the centuries.

The original building was destroyed by fire in 1488 and then rebuilt in late Gothic style. This reconstruction at the end of the 15th century created the structure that still defines the city center today.

The church houses an important collection of paintings by Flemish masters from different periods, depicting biblical scenes and religious themes. Visitors can discover these artworks while walking through the interior and experience the artistic heritage directly.

The church is open to visitors, and guided tours through the building can be arranged. The bell tower offers a climb with views over the surrounding area and can be visited in suitable weather conditions.

From the bell tower, extensive views stretch across the West Flanders landscape, from distant hills to historic structures far away. This vantage point reveals how centrally the church sits within the regional geography.
