Mérode Castle, Everberg, Castle and noble residence in Everberg, Belgium
Mérode Castle is a structure with three main buildings: a primary residence, stables, and servant quarters, all built from brown stone with walls exceeding two meters in thickness. The complex contains rooms such as the knight's hall and a grand drawing room that are open to visitors during special occasions.
The castle's central keep was built in the late 14th century, replacing an earlier fortress that occupied the same spot. It then developed into a noble residence that the family expanded and modified over the following centuries.
Inside, you can see collections gathered by the Mérode family across generations, including furniture, paintings, and leather wall coverings from Cordoba. These objects show how the residents lived and what they valued over time.
The castle opens to visitors only during special events and occasions, allowing access to its interior rooms. You should check in advance for scheduled openings to plan your visit.
The castle grounds feature two contrasting park styles: an English landscape park with ponds covering about 12 hectares, and a French-style formal garden spanning about 60 hectares. This combination shows two opposite approaches to garden design side by side.
