Spontin Castle

Spontin Castle stands on a small island in the Bocq River, featuring thick stone walls, slate-roofed towers, and a moat spanned by a drawbridge. The building displays various styles added over centuries of occupation and reconstruction while maintaining its core medieval form.

Pierre de Beaufort built this fortress between 1266 and 1289 as a defensive position on the Bocq River. The Beaufort-Spontin family held control for centuries until the mid-nineteenth century, when the castle eventually changed ownership and use.

The castle reflects how this structure evolved from a military stronghold into a family residence over centuries. Its position on an island in the Bocq River shaped how people used and valued this place throughout time.

The castle currently remains closed to the public due to ongoing restoration work managed by the Les Cimaises de Spontin association. You can view and photograph it from the riverbank to see the structure from a distance.

A carved stone well sits within the castle walls, created by medieval craftsmen using hand tools. A wrought iron frame from the nineteenth century marks where a dungeon once stood, showing how the building served different purposes over time.
