Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel

The seven-sided baroque church features a central dome supported by columns and contains numerous chapels dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Construction of the basilica began in 1609 under architect Wenceslas Cobergher, marking the first baroque religious structure in Flanders.

The basilica receives numerous pilgrims from May to November, with many participating in the 57-kilometer trek from Antwerp called De Grote Trek.

The basilica stands at an elevation of 72 meters and includes a tower behind the main dome, which remains partially hidden from the entrance view.

The dome interior displays 298 gilded stars surrounding a small statue of the Virgin Mary, which wears oversized white ceremonial clothing.
