Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel

The Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel is a seven-sided baroque church topped with a prominent dome supported by columns. Inside, it contains numerous chapels arranged around the central space, creating a symmetrical layout that draws the eye upward.

Construction started in 1609 under architect Wenceslas Cobergher and marked the first major baroque church building in Flanders. The project emerged during a period of growing devotion to Mary in the region and influenced the design of later religious buildings.

The site has drawn pilgrims for centuries who come to pray to the Virgin Mary and express their devotion through visits and processions. The chapels inside and the walking routes leading here show how much this place means to many people.

The basilica sits on a hilltop and can be reached on foot, with walking paths coming from different directions. Visitors have space to explore at their own pace, and it is worth allowing time to see both the interior and surrounding grounds.

The dome interior is decorated with around 300 gilded stars surrounding a small statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue wears white ceremonial garments that appear noticeably oversized, immediately catching the visitor's eye.
