Openluchtmuseum Bachten de Kupe, Open-air museum in Izenberge, Belgium.
Openluchtmuseum Bachten de Kupe is an open-air museum with 46 authentic buildings arranged as a traditional farming village from the Westhoek region of Belgium. The structures display rural architecture and living arrangements typical of the area.
The museum preserves structures from between 1650 and 1900, including a barn from 1759 and a farmhouse from before 1650. Some workers' houses were relocated from the villages of Krombeke and Oostvleteren and date from 1770-1780.
The name "Bachten de Kupe" comes from West Flemish dialect and refers to the area west of the IJzer River. You hear locals still speak this way as you walk through the village streets.
The museum has cobblestone streets connecting the buildings that visitors can walk through. The pathways have been newly renovated and provide wheelchair access throughout most of the site.
The museum contains two preserved horse mills that were once used for grain grinding. These rare machines show a forgotten method of power generation that existed long before steam power.
