Church of Our Lady, Gothic church in Aarschot, Belgium.

Description

Church of Our Lady is a gothic church in Aarschot built with white limestone and brown ironstone in alternating layers, displaying the late 15th-century Demer gothic style. Inside you will find choir stalls by Jan Borchman and a wrought iron chandelier made by Quinten Massijs.

History

This structure was built in the late 15th century as Aarschot grew in importance and later became a collegiate church with thirteen canons led by Anthony de Croÿ. French rule at the end of the 18th century ended this chapter when the building was forced to close.

Culture

The stone chancel rood screen features detailed relief sculptures showing Jesus entering Jerusalem, the crucifixion, and the resurrection, which taught biblical stories to medieval worshippers. These carved scenes served as visual instruction for congregants who could not read.

Practical

The building is typically open during daytime hours and welcomes visitors starting in the morning with access available until midday. There is no admission fee to visit, making it an easily accessible stop for travelers exploring the town.

Did you know?

The chandelier inside was created by Quinten Massijs, a renowned Renaissance metalworker, revealing that Aarschot had connections to master craftspeople of that era. This piece is a rare example of the metalwork quality produced in the region.
