Fort van Liezele, Military fortress and history museum in Puurs-Sint-Amands, Belgium
Fort van Liezele is a fortified structure with thick walls, gun turrets, and underground passages built in the early 1900s. It was part of a defensive system protecting the region around Antwerp.
The fort was built between 1906 and 1914 in response to military tensions in Europe and served national defense purposes. It saw action during the early months of World War I.
The fort carries the name of a nearby village and reveals how soldiers and workers lived and labored in this place. Exhibits here share personal stories of these people through objects and accounts that still feel present today.
The site is open to visitors on several days each week and offers different ways to explore the structures. Audio guides in several languages help you understand the history and layout.
Some of the restored soldier quarters have been converted into guest rooms where visitors can stay overnight. This allows you to experience the place directly in a historical setting with modern comforts.
