Fatih-moskee, Ottoman mosque in Beringen-Mijn, Belgium
The Fatih mosque is a place of worship in Beringen with a central dome reaching 16 meters high and two minarets extending 26 meters above the ground. The interior is organized for prayer and decorated with traditional ceramic and metalwork that reflects Islamic artistic traditions.
Construction was completed in 1994 following the arrival of Turkish workers who came to labor in the Beringen coal mines. The building emerged from the community's need for a dedicated space to practice their faith.
The interior walls display traditional blue ceramic tiles imported from Turkey, reflecting the community's connection to its homeland. A large copper chandelier handcrafted by Turkish artisans adds to the authentic atmosphere.
Visitors can tour the building on most days of the week, though not during Friday prayers when the community gathers. It is helpful to check local tourism resources or ask about visiting arrangements in advance.
In 2017 the building lost its official recognition and regional funding, yet it continues to operate through support from overseas. This experience reveals how the community has persevered despite these setbacks.
