Kieldrecht Lock

The Kieldrecht Lock is a navigation system in the Port of Antwerp that connects the Scheldt River to the Waasland Canal through a large lock chamber. The structure has four sliding gates and works to move ships between different water levels.

Construction of the lock began in 2011 and finished in 2015, involving a massive water-filling process. The project was built to expand port capacity and allow larger vessels to reach inland waterways.

King Philippe of Belgium participated in the official inauguration ceremony of the Kieldrecht Lock on June 10, 2016, marking its significance for maritime commerce.

You can observe the lock from various viewpoints, especially when large vessels pass through it. The best time to watch is during busy periods when ships move through the chamber.

The lock was built using around 22,000 tonnes of steel, three times the amount used in the Eiffel Tower. This enormous quantity of material demonstrates the scale of engineering needed for this modern port facility.
