Flône Abbey, Religious complex in Amay, Belgium

Flône Abbey is a religious complex on the left bank of the Meuse River in Amay, consisting of a church, convent, and a distinctive junction tower. These structures work together to form a cohesive building complex that reflects centuries of adaptation and use.

Three knight brothers founded the religious settlement in 1075 on land granted by Henry I of Verdun, Bishop of Liège. This donation established the foundation for a community that grew and adapted over the following centuries.

The Church of Saint-Matthieu displays five black marble tombstones and paintings of Saints Matthew and Augustine on its walls. Visitors can also see baptismal fonts from the 17th century that show the craftsmanship of earlier generations.

The building houses both elementary and secondary schools with more than 1500 students combined, so it functions as an active learning center during school hours. Visitors should consider school schedules to find the best time to explore the site.

The church houses a reliquary of Saint Denise containing crystallized blood and earth from Christian martyrs in Roman catacombs. This extraordinary artifact makes the building a significant pilgrimage destination for those drawn to early Christian history.
