Bedford House Cemetery, Military cemetery in Zillebeke, Belgium.
Bedford House Cemetery is a World War I burial ground near Ypres with more than 5000 white limestone headstones. The stones stand in neat rows across several enclosed sections, creating a solemn and orderly layout.
The cemetery opened in December 1915 during World War I when fighting raged around Ypres. It received soldiers from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India.
Each headstone displays the national emblem, military rank, regiment, and a personal inscription chosen by the soldier's family. These carvings tell stories of loved ones, faith, and connections that extend beyond the battlefield.
The grounds are open daily and maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission with visitor facilities. Information boards throughout help you navigate the site and understand its history and layout.
Among the graves lies Second Lieutenant Rupert Price Hallowes, who received both the Military Cross and the Victoria Cross. This rare decoration makes his burial place especially notable among the headstones.
