The cemetery was established in 1914 during World War I when the front line trenches crossed through the village of Zillebeke.
The cemetery earned the name 'Aristocrats Cemetery' as many of the officers buried here belonged to noble families of the British Empire.
The cemetery sits 3 kilometers east of Ieper town center on Maaldestedestraat, accessible via the N8 road connecting Ieper to Menen.
Architect William Harrison Cowlishaw designed this plot with unusual features, allowing private memorials contrary to standard Commonwealth cemetery guidelines.
