Sanctuary Wood Hill 62, Military museum in Zillebeke, Belgium.
Sanctuary Wood Hill 62 is a military museum in Zillebeke, near Ypres, that displays artifacts and preserved field fortifications from the First World War. The site is divided into an indoor section with weapons and personal objects and an outdoor area where original trench networks remain in place.
The ground around Zillebeke was among the most contested stretches of the Western Front throughout the First World War, with Hill 62 serving as a key point in the line. Canadian troops held and defended this section in 1916 during some of the heaviest fighting in the area.
The museum holds a collection of stereoscopic photographs taken during the war, and visitors can view them through original handheld viewers still on display. These images show soldiers in candid moments, giving a personal feel that standard photographs rarely capture.
The outdoor trench area has uneven ground and can be wet and muddy, so sturdy waterproof footwear is a good idea. Allow enough time to move through both the indoor and outdoor sections without rushing.
The site sits on private land that has stayed in the same family since the end of the First World War and was never sold to developers. This is one reason the trenches here survived when most others in the region were filled in and built over during the following decades.
