The Liverpool Scottish memorial stone, World War I memorial in Ypres, Belgium

The Liverpool Scottish memorial stone stands at Railway Wood on the Bellewaarde Ridge near Zillebeke, east of Ypres, and displays the badge of the 10th Scottish Battalion. The stone carries inscriptions in English and Dutch that detail the battalion's actions during the Battle of Bellewaarde.

The stone commemorates June 16, 1915, when the Liverpool Scottish Battalion launched an assault on German trenches in this location. The engagement resulted in 75 soldiers killed, 201 wounded, and 103 missing in action.

The stone physically links Liverpool to this battleground by incorporating two tonnes of flagstones from the city's streets. This material connection makes the distant battle feel closer to the regiment's home city.

The stone sits on elevated terrain that is accessible on foot but offers little shelter from the elements. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and potentially wet conditions, especially in cooler months.

The stone contains a keystone from the Fraser Street barracks in Liverpool, which stood there for many years before being relocated to Belgium in 2000. This architectural element ties the regiment's former home directly to its memorial abroad.
