Castle of Westerlo, Medieval castle in Westerlo, Belgium
The Castle of Westerlo features thick stone walls measuring 2.5 meters, with a central tower reaching 10 meters in height within its Renaissance structure.
The Merode family obtained the castle through marriage in the 15th century and transformed it from a fortified structure into their noble residence.
The interior contains Renaissance tapestries, family portraits, porcelain collections, and original furnishings spanning from the 16th to 19th centuries.
The castle opens to visitors during the first week of July, offering guided tours through selected rooms and access to the surrounding English landscape park.
The castle grounds include two separate structures: the Old Castle from the 14th century and the New Castle built between 1909 and 1912.
