Sint-Nicolaaskerk, Gothic parish church in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium
Sint-Nicolaaskerk is a Gothic parish church with five naves and a tower made of Tournai bluestone located at the eastern edge of the Grand Market Square. The interior contains seven altars and numerous artworks, including a Baroque organ with more than 3000 pipes, the largest in the Waasland region.
The church was established in 1217 when Bishop Gosuinus of Tournai created an independent Saint Nicholas parish, separate from Waasmunster. This founding marked the beginning of the town's religious independence.
The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and serves as a spiritual center for the community. The choice of patron saint reflects the historical importance of trade and protection in the region.
The church opens regularly for visitors and can be explored on most weekdays. It helps to check ahead whether special events might affect visiting times.
