Description
Sint-Nicolaaskerk is a Gothic parish church with five naves and a tower made of Tournai bluestone located at the eastern edge of the Grand Market Square. The interior contains seven altars and numerous artworks, including a Baroque organ with more than 3000 pipes, the largest in the Waasland region.
History
The church was established in 1217 when Bishop Gosuinus of Tournai created an independent Saint Nicholas parish, separate from Waasmunster. This founding marked the beginning of the town's religious independence.
